SENIORS HOME MATCH AGAINT TOFT - 9th April 2025. RESULT W 4 - 2

Another glorious day at Burghley Park. The course was in very good condition and seems to get better each day.

For our first match of the season we hosted Toft GC. I think it safe to say that Toft thoroughly enjoyed their day, judging by the many positive comments regarding the friendly reception, the quality of the course and the excellence of lunch. Thank you to all Non Players who contributed in any way.

BPGC won the Match 4 points to 2, but it is important to note that 5 of the 6 matches went down to the 17th Green, and 2 of those to the 18th. 

In the Leading match Toft Captain Ray Bills started off quite brilliantly and BP were quickly 2 Down, but by the 9th BP had recovered to be 1 Up. On the Back 9 it was nip and tuck with no holes halved until the 18th, Graham Hughes, an ex BPGC member, was very consistent. David Court played very well and his good play was rewarded by being Nearest to The Pin on a tricky 16th pin placement. 

In the 2nd match Michael Earl and Clive Pearce were up against an inspired Toft Pairing and despite scoring well could not live with Messrs Barnes & Clarke. Jim Clarke was rewarded for his generally excellent golf by being Nearest The Pin for Toft.

David Jackson & Keith Duff were pleased with a Half in the 3rd Match , but in Matches 4, 5 & 6 BPGC came to the fore. A close win by Tim Chapman & Richard Martin, followed by two 3/1s from Bill Glencross & Michael Marriott and Alan Kinch & Kevin de Trafford tipping the balance in our favour.

SENIORS COFFEE MORNING - MIXED WALTZ 17th February 2025

On a cold, dare I say “dreich” morning ( which was first recorded in 1420 to mean “enduring” or “slow, tedious) 30 adventurous Senior Golfers ventured forth to compete in a Waltz. 

Excellently organised by the most dependable Stephanie, who provided some very good prizes, and supported silently by The Greenkeeping staff who have worked tirelessly of late to provide us with a most playeable course during an indifferent period of weather.

Third place, on count back, went to Janet Roberts, Stephern Cheeseman and Mark Crampton with 33 points.

Second prize, also on count back, went to Janet & Keith Duff with George C-J; who scored 33 points including 13 on the last 2 Holes,

First place went to Pippa Le Sage, Michael McCarthy and, on her debut, Louise McFerran with a most commendable 37 points including a 9 pointer 3rd Hole.

Nearest The Pin, on the 3rd, went to Barbara Newell, much to the chagrin of brother David.

Sadly my own play was poor, apologies to Chris Clarke and Clare Farrell, who were a delight to partner. You might even say I played like a “tumshie”.

Once again a most convivial occasion and it is hoped members will signup for the next Coffee Morning on Monday March 3rd. Please add your name to the Start Up Sheet in The Clubhouse and encourage your friends to join us.

A very promising turnout of 31 players for the first Seniors Golf & Coffee Morning of 2025.

Conditions were not at all easy, with it being a tad chilly and with firm bounces on the still frozen course making it tricky to control shots, particularly, around the Winter Greens. 

Scores were as expected above par, that is for all bar one player newcomer Peter Taylor who scored a remarkable 21 points to win the Men’s Competition from Stephen Cheeseman and Mark Crampton who both scored 17 points. Steve finishing 2nd on countback. Notable mention for David Shales who parred the 8th and birdied the 9th to score 7 points!

The Ladies’ Competition was won by the ever competitive Pauline Crampin with 17 points with Marilyn Marriott being placed 2nd with 15 points on countback from Clare Farrell.

A most convivial occasion excellently organised by Stephanie Crook. We look forward to our next Coffee Morning on Monday February 17th. Please add your name to the Start Up Sheet in The Clubhouse and encourage your friends to join us.

SENIORS > LADIES - McKENZIE CUP 2024

On Monday the 21st October 14 teams took part in the annual McKenzie Cup competition which is normally a walkover for the Seniors but not this time. The Ladies dug deep and outperformed the Seniors’ men by scoring 256 points to 253 in the aggregated betterball pairs stableford format. Any suggestion that Barry Doggett’s trolley had been tampered with, making him unable continue and being forced to retire after 9 holes, is refuted by the Ladies Captain or any member of her team.  We not only enjoyed some pleasant weather but also enjoyed a tasty lunch of ham egg and chips after the competition.

SENIORS AWAY TRIP - BREADSALL PRIORY 2024

22 optimistic Burghley seniors set off on Monday 30th September to beautiful Breadsall, near Derby, to enjoy its fine Marriott Hotel hospitality and two excellent golf courses, last visited by the Seniors in 2017, under the captaincy of Alan Gray.

 

The hospitality and food and drink were indeed fine, and the staff were most obliging, but sadly the weather didn’t play ball. Day one was a total washout, both courses closed; day two saw the Moorland course opened but with restrictions (no bunkers, no buggies). Seven teams of three set off in pouring rain, which became lighter rain and a freezing north-easterly half-gale, but everyone finished and some reported surprisingly reasonable scores. I enjoyed the company, but I can’t say I enjoyed the golf.

Janet Devlin won the 6th hole NTP by a whisker from Marilyn, and the Hickmans together topped up their wine cellar with the other three NTP prizes. I’m not sure who won the picture quiz, but the chocolates were awarded and shared out.

 

On Wednesday, our planned outing on the Priory course was scuppered by its closure again, but four hardy survivors from Tuesday had a fourball on the Moorland in mostly dry but chilly conditions.

 

It’s a lovely venue, or would be in good weather. I had visited to check it out in July, and it poured with rain that day. If you’re thinking of booking a holiday in England, check with me first, then don’t pick the same dates as I do!
